Kamloops to Birch Island--7/17/09 88 miles

Our first of 3 long days in a row. We ride a century tomorrow, and the next day. Today, Phil

wiped out --no injuries though. That makes 6 crashes (that we know of). Barbara has crashed twice, Paul three times.

It's warm and muggy here at our campground, not far from the North Thompson River.

Now we're in terrain that seems a lot like northern Montana.

It reminds me of the last time I was with Dad at his property on the Swan River, crashing through the brush, trying to find the property markers.

Today, the first 30 miles was a killer for me. I'm a slow starter and did not do well today before my caffeine. But I didn't want to drink my Starbucks can too soon because I was hopeful about the town of Barriere. (It has an accent on it and you would think it sounds very chic. But in fact, the locals call it Barrier. Like you're blocked from getting things.)

On the map, Barriere looks about the same size as Mission and Hope, 2 lovely towns that did have cappuccino. But in reality, there was not even good food in this town, much less espresso.

I had an A & W root beer float for lunch.

Tomorrow is my friend Carlos' 49th birthday and I will call him from a pay phone in a campground. This immediately brings to mind his 21st birthday, in 1981, and the campground in Acadia National Park in Maine where I called him, exactly 28 years ago. It is a fantastic thing to be biking again this summer and I am nostalgic for all trips past.
