(Dean, Ted, Barbara, Barb.....enjoying the best cappuccino in town)
...and mine is the ability to sniff out the best food and drink in any new town. Today, I knew the town of Mission would have espresso, I just had to figure out where to find it.
Today we rode from Fort Langley to Agassiz. It was our first riding day and I was so happy this morning that I was grinning ear to ear. Nothing makes me happier than the first day of a bike trip. Two weeks of heaven is just ahead of me, nothing but the open road. Later, I will be hot and sweaty, tired and sore, I will have to fix a flat tire, I will have to sleep on a rocky campground. Things will go wrong, but right now, I am just filled with anticipation. I mentioned this to Lynda (from Ontario, traveling with her husband Vince) and she knew immediately what I meant. "I was crying with happiness this morning," she told me.
When I arrived at the outskirts of Mission, Karl (from Cologne, Germany) was my only companion. But he was quite happy to observe and benefit from my special talent. We located "Lotta Java" (or something like that) in the mall and enjoyed a very civilized treat: cappuccino in mugs at an outdoor table. I have been warned that there will be no more espresso shops for the next 3 days, so it was nice to savor today's treat.
We caught up with Dean and 5 others at the Longhouse Museum (yawn) where we were told that we might be able to hear voices from the big rock. However, no voices were heard. Dean and I biked together for the rest of the day, along with Vince and Lynda.
Over cappuccino, Karl had noted that on the first day of the trip, many riders would push hard to show off and be the first to camp. But what's the point? There is not much to do here in the campground in Agassiz. We were the last riders to arrive and still made it by 2:30 pm, arriving just as Bud and Jason pulled in with our gear. The earliest riders had headed into town for the local bar; I guess that's what you can do if you arrive early.
There is no place to swim here and it's very hot, but there is a rumor of ice cream nearby, so that is where I am headed.
I was very hot and dehydrated and liked a cold water bottle on my forehead, to the amusement of my fellow trippers.
Fresh trout for dinner!
